Ahmadinejad: US Needs Counsel on Afghanistan
As Washington plans to implement a new strategy in Afghanistan, Iran's president says the White House should seek advice from regional countries on the issue.

While questioning the intentions of US military presence in the region, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said a major problem for the US administration is that Washington "does not know the people of the region."

In late March, US President Barack Obama unveiled a new plan to defeat the Taliban and al-Qaeda, saying he wants to "disrupt, dismantle and defeat" the insurgency in the war-ridden country.

He vowed to deploy more troops to the country while sending in hundreds of civilian specialists tasked with training and building the Afghan army and police force.

Ahmadinejad, however, said the US administration seems to be in needs of further consultation.

"They are not aware of the situation on the ground. They make mistakes after mistakes," Ahmadinejad told journalists from international news organizations.

"They should ask the people who know the region well; they should seek their consultations."

His remarks come as world powers plan to invite Iran to a G8 foreign ministerial meeting on restoring stability in Afghanistan.
