US Reaches out to China to Quell Violence in Pakistan

With Pakistan racked by widening insurgency, the US makes an appeal to China to provide training and even military equipment to help bring stability back to the troubled country.

According to US officials, Richard Holbrooke, the US administration's special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, recently raised the issue during a visit to China, the Boston Globe reported on Monday.
In a telephone conversation earlier this month with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, US President Barack Obama shared his "concerns" over security issues including, deteriorating conditions in Pakistan.
While China traditionally has been disinclined to intervene in other countries' affairs, Beijing officials have expressed concern that the activities of the Taliban on its western border could destabilize the region and jeopardize China's rising economic presence in Pakistan.
China's ambassador Luo Zhaohui said in a speech earlier this month that 10,000 Chinese engineers and technicians work in the country.
A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity said while China is reluctant to engage more actively on the issue, "You can see that they're thinking about it."
